Golf can be a really fun sport, but it has a very sharp learning curve. Whenever you first start out in golf, it’s quite hard at first to achieve a straight ball flight, especially from the tee. Today, we will be discussing six drivers and the most important features in order to find the best driver for beginners.

We’ll take a deep dive into each driver, looking at forgiveness, distance and longevity in terms of how long the driver will support your game for as you start to improve.

We’ll then talk through each of the most important features that helps a beginner’s game, which in turn will help make your overall experience a lot more enjoyable.

Finding the Best Driver for Beginners

We’ll now take that deep dive into six hand picked drivers, which I feel are the only contenders when looking for the best driver for beginners. While we will discuss forgiveness, distance and longevity you’ll be able to start to work out which is going to be the best driver for you.

We’ll then list a few pro’s and con’s alongside each product, and if you’d like to see how each driver is helping other golfers then feel free to click on the Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk links.

Callaway Rogue Driver

What makes this driver stand out from the rest is its Jailbreak technology that adds many extra benefits to the club. For example the club is 25% lighter than the previous model and at the same time it generates more ball speed across the face of the club. Overall, this special Jailbreak effect promotes a boost in both distance and ball speed which are two components important to early stage golfers.

Forgiveness

Callaway went above and beyond the call of duty when it came to creating forgiveness for this club. As part of their process they worked with the famous Boeing aircraft company here in the United States to optimize their aerodynamics of the club to aid in forgiveness overall. By redesigning the edges of the club and overall geometry they used next level aerodynamics to help straighten out off center hits.

In addition to that collaboration with the aircraft company, they also used a new face technology called X-Face VFT architecture. This new technology specifically designed the thickness to change in different areas of the club face to help better control off-center impacts. This reduces the range that your slice or hook would potentially travel. They also used a new carbon material on the club to help redistribute the weight to the perimeter of the club which also helps with forgiveness.

Distance

Not only does this club do an excellent job with forgiveness, but it does just as well in the distance department! The club was stiffened to help create more ball speed at impact, and of course the faster you hit the ball the further it flies. In general Callaway’s main focus to help beginners with this club was centered around increasing ball speed and distance.

To do this, the technologies that they created worked hand in hand to increase the overall ball speed. For example their collaboration with Boeing not only increased forgiveness but due to the better aerodynamics, this also decreased the drag of the club which allows for faster swing speeds. Since the club was 25% lighter this means that even swinging it at normal speeds has the potential to increase the ball speed and distance by 25%. Those are ideal numbers, but they give you an idea of how much potential this club has to improve your distance.

PROS

  • ✅    X-Face VFT Technology.
  • ✅    Jailbreak Technology.
  • ✅    Advanced Aerodynamics.

CONS

  • X    Not many that we could find.

Callaway Epic Flash

The Callaway Epic Flash looks as epic as the name sounds with a neon green and yellow piping on an otherwise all black club head. Besides the looks, what also sets this club apart was the fact that Callaway spent 5 million US dollars (3.6 million pounds) on artificial intelligence to design their club. At this point it may be the first and only golf club that was designed by a supercomputer instead of a person.

Forgiveness

This driver is one of the most forgiving options on this list, because the level of forgiveness can be changed based on whoever is swinging the club. To do this, Callaway has installed adjustable weights and a slider to help best suit the driver for you. This way if you have the tendency to hit a slice, you can put the weight towards the shaft of the club to help you prevent that extra curve.

Since these are adjustable, just like your swing, you can easily move the weights around to make the club more forgiving not just for the beginning of your golf career but throughout the entire thing. If you are unsure of which settings to begin with, just start with the sliders as far apart from each other as possible.

Distance

Now distance is definitely what this club was designed and optimized for due to the artificial intelligence that Callaway used. That artificial intelligence came up with a brand new flash face technology which generated more ball speed than most drivers. This club is almost guaranteed to instantly improve your carry distance and ball speed.

To improve your distance and forgiveness at the same time, the flash face technology incorporates a bullseye target on the front of the club face. Similar to a baseball bat, this bullseye helps increase the size of the sweet spot on the club face. This additional bullseye also leads to additional distance.

Longevity

With the adjustable features of this club, it is designed to last you a long time and far surpassing just your beginning years. Using the adjustable weights properly means that this club will last you quite a while and will help you be successful for many years to come.

PROS

  • ✅   Artificial Intelligence Design
  • ✅   Adjustable Sliding Weight
  • ✅   Flash Face Technology

CONS

  • X    Requires Fine Tuning for Forgiveness

Cleveland Launcher HB Turbo

This driver was designed with four speciality features that add different benefits to the club. It was mostly designed for distance but has forgiveness better than the standard driver which makes it another great option for beginners. Overall, this driver is different because instead of three standard design features it has four, which we will discuss in detail now.

Forgiveness

Cleveland got very technical with the finite details when it came to designing this driver, going so far as to adjust features by tenths of a millimeter to optimize the club perfectly for beginners. The one design feature out of the four that deals specifically with forgiveness is the HiBore crown and ultralight hosel.

This HiBore crown is where Cleveland really got specific by using it to lower the center of gravity of the club by 2.2 millimeters. Even this small of a difference helps with forgiveness, because it lowers the overall center of gravity position and the lower the better. The ultralight hosel is also used to redistribute the weight to make it lower, which also adds to the forgiveness of the club.

Cleveland Launcher HB Turbo - one of the best drivers for beginners

Distance

Now distance is this club’s pride and joy. The remaining three features are specifically designed to optimize the distance of the club. First is a turbocharged cup face which is as powerful as the name sounds. This face is thinner than most which helps for increased distance since the ball speed is faster.

The second feature is known as deep weighting which is shifting towards the back and bottom of the club which helps deliver more power and speed at impact, hence causing the ball to fly farther. Finally, there is the counter balanced shaft design which again optimizes the center of gravity for additional power and distance at impact.

Longevity

Now when it comes to longevity is where this club is the weakest. Due to so much technology in the club and a thinner club face, the club is really designed for beginners in mind. This technology may become hurtful rather than helpful once you become a more experienced golfer.

PROS

  • ✅     Four Technological Features.
  • ✅     Best Driver for Distance.

CONS

  • X     One of the Higher Priced Options

Cobra F-Max Airspeed

Cobra has always been known as one of the companies to produce the best drivers in the sport of golf and they certainly did not disappoint here. Now this is not the driver for looks if that is something you care about, but it does have something else that not many other drivers can brag about. This driver is one of the lightest golf clubs that you may ever swing in your entire life!

Forgiveness

Cobra did not mess around with forgiveness in this club and made it one of their top priorities. Starting with increasing the weight in the back and heel of the club, they have taken these measures to help fight against the popular beginner slice. They have also designed the club to have an offset hosel which will correct any slice tendencies and help you find the middle of the fairway without much struggle.

Additionally, they have introduced a carbon fiber crown which makes the weight lighter on top of the club and even further allows the weight to be moved towards the rear. Again this increases the overall forgiveness of the club and fights those common beginner tendencies.

Cobra F-Max Airspeed - one of the best drivers for beginners

Distance

Since the club is extremely light, this means you are able to generate faster club speed without changing your swing at all. In general, having a lighter club helps you generate more power in your swing without even trying. This club is actually 56 grams (2 ounces) lighter than the standard driver.

To shave off this weight Cobra begin by making their crown carbon fiber instead of titanium. Next they made the shaft lighter and made the grip as light as possible as well. They also made the club head lighter too! With all of this extra weight taken off, you will instantly notice the difference this club makes when it comes to the distances of your drive.

Longevity

Now since the club is so light, it makes it much better for beginners. However as your club speed increases naturally you may need to switch out the shaft of the club. Once you make this switch the club will be better for you and last longer in your golf career.

PROS

  • ✅     Most Lightweight Option.
  • ✅     Extra Power Generated with Little Effort.

CONS

  • X    May not be suitable once your natural swing speed increases.

    TaylorMade SIM Max

This is by far one of the most popular new options that have come out within the past year. It turned a lot of heads with its unique design, but trust us it was created with aerodynamics in mind. This item is perfect for beginners because of its Twist Face technology, which we will discuss in more detail shortly.

    Forgiveness

When it comes to forgiveness there are three main technological features that TaylorMade included in their design. The first being the Twist Face technology from above. This technology allows you to rotate the club face to help balance out your mishit tendencies. It is similar to changing the weight of the club, but instead you change the angle of the club face.

TaylorMade SIM Max - one of the best drivers for beginners

Additionally, their Thru-Slot Speed Pocket helps increase the sole flexibility of the club which increases forgiveness on low mishits specifically. This helps keep even your bad hits flying in the air for as long as possible. The last piece of technology is their asymmetric sole shape on the club which puts the weight in the back of the club, hence increasing forgiveness.

    Distance

Even with all of those great forgiveness benefits, TaylorMade still made time to make this one of their farthest hitting drivers ever. Using speed injection, TaylorMade has pushed their club to the legal limits of golf by increasing the maximum ball speed across the club face.

In addition to this optimized club face, they have also introduced brand new inverted cone technology. This technology also benefits the club face by increasing the sweet spot for you as a beginner. It will help with mishits, but mainly gives you a great reward for the solid impact you make with the ball off of the tee. There is nothing better than being rewarded for a great ball strike.

    Longevity

Although there is all of this technology, so you would think there is a high risk of something breaking, TaylorMade has made this driver to last. This will not be a driver that you see going off of the market soon and it is a great option whether you are a beginner or a professional.

This is becoming more popular with early stage golfers, as it appears to be doing the best job at helping hit more fairways. So for me, this is what I would put forward as the best driver for beginners.

    PROS

    • ✅     Six Technological Features!
    • ✅     Optimized Club Face.
    • ✅     Ultimate Forgiveness.

    CONS

    • X    Most Expensive Option On Our List.

    Wilson Staff D7 Driver

Last but not least we bring you the Wilson Staff D7 Driver. Wilson Staff is a golf company that has always been centered around forgiveness for beginners which easily puts this club on our list for you. This club specifically is great for you as a beginner, because of its simple design which helps you take your mind off of technology and focus on your swing.

    Forgiveness

This design has specifically been optimized by Wilson Staff to be easy to swing which is always great for beginners to learn from. This driver has also been designed to help out golfers with slower swing speeds, which will likely be you at the beginning when you are getting comfortable with your swing. For these reasons the driver is very forgiving since it was designed specifically with beginners in mind.

Similar to other drivers on this list, the weight has also been optimized to sit in the back of the club head for increased forgiveness. What makes this club interesting is that depending on which loft you select the weight has been optimized differently to make it the best option for you.

Wilson Staff D7 Driver - one of the best drivers for beginners

    Distance

When it comes to distance this club has been designed to be another lightweight option for beginners. With a composite crown made of Kevlar and carbon fiber (two of the lightest possible materials in golf) Wilson Staff has gone out of their way to make the club light and forgiving. Again since it is a light golf club you will generate more power even with a standard swing.

We briefly mentioned how the different lofts have been optimized for weight, but this is not only a factor in forgiveness but it pertains to distance as well. For this club, the general rule of thumb is the increased loft means an increased carry distance.

    Longevity

This club will last long physically, but that does not mean it will necessarily be the best club for you in the long run. This club has no options for adjustment and since it is specifically designed with beginners in mind, you may one day grow out of it.

    PROS

    • ✅     Designed for Beginners!
    • ✅     Another Great Lightweight Option

    CONS

    • X     May not be suitable when you start to get into the mid-handicap range

    Important Features for Beginners

How to Choose the Best Driver for Beginners

You will notice throughout this article that I’ve used some technical terms when finding the best driver for beginners. It’s important you understand what these features mean, and why I am taking them in serious consideration to help you and your game.

We’ll discuss these now, so you can decide on what you feel the best driver is for beginners is.

    Feel & Feedback

When it comes to learning how to golf, how the club feels and what you feel when hitting the ball will be extremely important. Instead of relying strictly on feel you can also listen to the differences in sound from hitting the ball either off of the toe or heel of the club. For instance hitting the ball off of the toe will feel as if the club head was lagging behind the ball, feeling as if you hit the ball before you expected to.

Unfortunately it is quite difficult to know how a club feels if you are trying to purchase it online. We suggest that you read through some of the club’s reviews to generate an idea how other people have felt when swinging the club. Ultimately it is the most helpful if you do some research about what driver you want so you have a general idea, and then you go to a local golf store or pro shop to try out the driver.

    Loft Options

What is great about some of these clubs is that the loft is adjustable by using a simple tool. All you would need to do is use a given golf screwdriver that comes with the driver, unscrew the crown in the club face and adjust your loft as necessary. This will help you determine which loft is best for you personally through simple trial and error, as well as feel and feedback.

Unfortunately changing the loft is not always that easy, and sometimes you cannot change the loft at all. In that case we recommend again meeting with a professional club fitter to get a better understanding of what loft is best for you. As a beginner your swing speed will be lower so it is best to get a driver with 12-14 degrees of loft.

    Shaft Options

In today’s day and age there are so many different shaft options that some would say they are endless. There are too many shafts to choose from in just one paragraph, but in general it is a good idea to pick the shaft that is the lightest option possible. Besides that there will be different flex options which relies on your swing speed.

When you begin your golf career we suggest starting with graphite shafts because it is an extra light material. This will help you generate more power and a greater swing speed. As your swing speed increases you may want to switch to a steel shaft, because swinging more weight will generate more power assuming the speed stays constant.

    Spin Rate

Spin rate can actually make a pretty big difference in the beginning days of your golf career. This is because a slice is mainly caused by the side spin that you put on the ball which causes it to veer off in either direction. A lower spin rate means your slice will not curve as far as it normally would. So a lower spin rate can really help beginners, because it will keep your ball flying as straight as possible.

Be aware that decreasing spin rate typically means that you lose a little distance in the process. However would you rather lose twenty yards on your drive and be in the fairway or be twenty yards further and in the trees? By the numbers a standard spin rate is 2,772 rotations per minute, so anything lower than that is good for a beginner driver.

    Technology

This is arguably the most important factor when it comes to picking out a driver for beginners. The technology that helps optimize forgiveness is adjusting the weight or center of gravity to be further back in the club head. To help increase swing speed you will want to look for clubs that have been optimized to be as light as possible.

Now at the end of the day your mind is still really the biggest problem solving technology out there on the course. A driver could be adjustable in every way possible, but it is up to you to use that power correctly to solve your problems. So remember that problem solving technology is great, but it can only help you so much.

    Overall Summary & Conclusion

    Best Driver for Beginners

TaylorMade SIM Max - one of the best drivers for beginnersAt the end of the day there are a lot of great options for drivers that can help you as a beginner. As mentioned above, my recommendation is the TaylorMade SIM Max driver. The reason why I feel this is the best driver for beginners is because it’s not only optimized for beginners, but much lower handicap players can benefit from this driver too – meaning it should last you a very long time.

Since this driver can be used in either capacity, you will not need to buy a new driver once you improve your game. Instead you can simply adjust a few settings if you need to and you will be good to go. Whether you take our recommendation or not, just look for a driver with problem solving technology, a low spin rate, and has many options for you to adjust.

We hope you enjoyed this article and go enjoy your brand new driver!
