The Best Golf Clubs for Beginners

To make this list, the grip had to be comfortable and durable, but most importantly, have excellent sweat resistance.

It had to be made of a material that wicks away moisture to help improve our game. In short, it had to be worthy enough to make us abandon our current grips in favour of something new.

This is what we found.

Key Features & Criteria

How to Find the Best Golf Clubs for Beginners

Most beginner golfers don’t know what to look for when buying a set of golf clubs. Below we are going to take a closer look at five of the most important features to consider when buying your first set of golf clubs including set makeup, shaft type and flex, weight, technology and affordability. Understanding these features are a must not just for beginners but golfers of all levels. Golf is a very difficult game to master, but the correct equipment will give you the best chance to improve and most importantly enjoy your golfing journey.

Set Makeup

Buying your first set of golf clubs can be pretty daunting. Most beginners’ sets are complete sets, but just because the description says complete set doesn’t mean that it is. Pay close attention to the makeup of the set, does it contain a driver, fairway wood/hybrid, irons, wedges, putter and a bag? If the answer is yes, then it is a complete set. If the answer is no you will need to buy additional clubs or a bag before you can make your way out onto the golf course. Complete sets are normally the most affordable option for beginners, but that doesn’t mean that it is the correct option for you. If the set doesn’t include a high-quality driver and putter you will be better off buying those clubs separate. A good driver and putter that features key technological advances can make a huge difference to your golf game at first. When it comes to driver’s forgiveness and maximum distance is vital, if the technology in a driver is focused on those key areas investing in a good driver from the beginning is a great option. Furthermore, putting is equally as important, a putter that has an easy-to-use alignment system will make a massive difference as you find your feet out on the greens.

Shaft Type and Flex

Beginner sets normally come standard with steel shafts, with some beginner sets the driver and woods/hybrids will feature graphite but with very basic sets steel shafts will be used throughout. Ladies and junior beginner sets will normally feature graphite shafts. Steel shafts are more affordable which is why they are used in beginner sets. If your swing speed is average or above-average playing with steel shafts to start with isn’t the end of the world, but for slow swinging players, steel shafts aren’t recommended. If possible, look for a set that has a mix of steel and graphite shafts. Graphite shafts in your driver and fairway woods will ensure forgiveness which is a must for beginners especially if consistency is an issue. In addition to shaft type, shaft flex is equally as important. For slow swinging players a ladies, senior or regular flex shaft will be recommended. If your swing speed is above average stiff shafts will be your best option. Don’t worry if you play with a stiff shaft when you should be playing with a regular, it won’t be the end of the world. The purpose of this is to ensure that you don’t end up with a senior flex shaft when you should be playing with a stiff shaft.

Weight

Shaft type and flex are directly correlated. Steel shafts are heavier than graphite shafts, stiffer shafts also tend to be heavier than flexible shafts. Top of the range graphite shafts are available in lightweight stiff options, but these aren’t the type of shafts that you will find in beginner sets. If a club is either too light or too heavy for you, you will compensate for this in your swing and that should never happen regardless of if you are a beginner or seasoned pro. Compensating your swing to match your equipment will lead to technical issues and that’s the last thing you want as a beginner. As a rule of thumb, slow swinging players will be best suited by playing with clubs that are on the lighter end of the spectrum and vice versa for players with above-average swing speeds.

Technology

The technology featured in modern golf clubs continues to amaze with every innovation from the industries leading manufacturers. Unfortunately for beginners, this technology is seldomly used when designing and manufacturing beginner golf clubs. Technology won’t turn you into a pro, but clubs that feature basic technological advances will make the game a lot easier at first. With putters and drivers in particular technology is very important. Technologically advanced drivers will assist with maximizing your swing speed, forgiveness on off-center strikes and most of these drivers can be adjusted to match your swing. Putting is the one area in golf that doesn’t require speed or strength, good putting stats can make a big difference to your final score, beginners that see quick changes to their handicaps are normally good putters and not necessarily long hitters. A technologically advanced putter will ensure good feel and it will also assist with alignment. Both of which are key to good performance on the greens.

Affordability

Last but not least affordability is a must when buying your first set of golf clubs. Spending a fortune on golf clubs that will hardly get used is a waste of time, you also don’t want to buy a set of clubs that makes the game even harder than it should be because they are completely wrong for you. Balance is key when it comes to buying golf clubs for beginners, the clubs need to be within your budget, but they need to be a good option for the person that’s going to use them. This is particularly important with kids’ clubs, don’t buy clubs that are too big for your child just because you don’t want to splurge on another set once they grow out of this set. By doing this you might just deter them from wanting to play golf in the first place if they have to play with clubs that are too big. Saving money on irons is acceptable, but don’t try to save money when it comes to buying a putter and driver, putters, in particular, can be used for many years. Tiger Woods still uses the same putter he used in the early 2000s. The market is flooded with a wide variety of golf clubs that vary greatly in terms of technology and price. For beginners finding the perfect balance between functionality, technology and affordability are key when buying your first set of golf clubs. Set makeup is vital from a functionality standpoint and in terms of technology shaft type, shaft flex and weight are very important. In the reviews below we are going to pay close attention to this to ensure that your first set of clubs gives you the best chance of success out on the golf course.

Frequently Asked Questions

Golf can be very intimidating when you first start and given how technical the sport is, having questions as a beginner is completely normal. Questions vary from what is a beginners golf club to how or how often should I clean my golf clubs. Below we are going to answer those questions as well as some other frequently asked questions by beginners about golf clubs.

What makes golf clubs suitable for beginners?

There is no right or wrong answer to this question. Beginners can either play with clubs that are designed specifically for beginners or they can play with top of the range clubs. The main difference between beginners and other golf clubs is technology. Beginners clubs feature limited technology in their designs. The demand for beginners clubs is fairly small in comparison to other clubs which is one of the main reasons why R&D isn’t a big focus for manufacturers when it comes to the design of beginners clubs. Furthermore, beginners normally don’t have the consistency and skill to maximize and capitalize on the technology that leading golf clubs have to offer. The most important aspects that beginners need to consider when deciding whether or not beginners clubs are suitable for them is shaft type, flex and weight. Fast swinging male golfers can get away with stiff shafts that are on the heavier end of the spectrum. Slow swinging beginners and women’s golfers in particular will be best suited with a set of clubs with lightweight, flexible graphite shafts.

How much should I spend on beginner golf clubs?

How much you spend on your first set of golf clubs as a beginner will depend on a variety of different factors. Complete sets that include all the clubs that you could potentially need as a beginner including a driver, fairway wood, irons, wedges and a putter will be cheaper than buying a set of irons separate from the driver fairway woods, wedges and putter. Complete sets tend to feature very basic technology which is why these sets are on the lower end of the price spectrum. This is something to keep in mind especially if you are looking for a set that features either steel or graphite shafts in particular. Striking a good balance is recommended between price and technology, you don’t want to spend a lot of money on clubs that you will potentially only use for a limited amount of time. On the other end, you don’t want to make life difficult for yourself by playing with clubs that are affordable but that aren’t suitable for you.

How long should I expect beginner golf clubs to last?

How often you play and how quickly your golf game progresses as a beginner will determine how long your first set of golf clubs will last. Some golfers play with the same set they started with for years, others will be in a position to change clubs within six months to a year of starting. As your consistency from a ball-striking perspective improves as a beginner you will be better off with clubs that feature more advanced technology. Furthermore, switching to adjustable clubs will also allow you to use technology to avoid hitting a specific shape. Most beginners miss both right and left, playing with adjustable clubs will only add confusion but as your consistency improves and once you figure out what your miss is technology really can be a game-changer.

What’s the best way to clean golf clubs?

Keeping your golf clubs clean from a durability perspective is a must. Golfers tend to be very lazy when it comes to cleaning their clubs out on course and over time this leads to durability issues. In addition to durability issues, dirty clubs will also have an impact on performance. Dirty grooves will lead to a loss in spin, and if a piece of mud or dirt gets in the way at impact accuracy can also be affected. Wiping your clubs with a wet towel after every shot before putting the club back in your bag is the easiest way to keep your clubs clean. Additionally, also make sure to keep the grooves either by using a small club brush that can be attached to your golf bag or by using a tee to pick out any dirt that might be stuck in your grooves. In addition to cleaning your clubheads make sure to clean your grips regularly as well using hot water and soap. Always make sure to dry your grips with a towel after cleaning and make sure that water doesn’t go into the shaft at the butt end of the grip. When cleaning your clubs don’t submerge and leave your clubs to stand in a bucket of water. With adjustable clubs in particular water can enter the clubhead or shaft which can cause rust.

How often do golf grips need replacing?

How often you play and how you take care of your grips will determine how often you need to replace them. For players that play weekly replacing your grips annually is recommended. If you clean your grips regularly you will be able to increase the lifespan of your grips by at least 3 – 6 months. In addition to cleaning your grips also make sure to use caution when inserting and removing your clubs into and out of your bag. If your club is stuck, take it out with caution instead of trying to force it out, this will ensure that your grip doesn’t get damaged in the process. Replacing your grips can be quite expensive, if it is time for new grips, start by replacing the grips on your woods and hybrids followed by replacing the grips on your irons and wedges a couple of months later. By spreading the cost out over a couple of months your budget won’t be as severely impacted.

Final Thoughts

Best Golf Clubs for Beginners

When it comes to the perfect golf set for beginners functionality is arguably the most important factor to consider. If a set doesn’t consist of all of the clubs that you need such as a driver, fairway woods, irons, wedges and a putter your golfing career will be off to a rocky start.

In addition to functionality, learning how to play with clubs that have the correct shaft is a must. If the shafts are too flexible or too tight or if the weight is wrong your swing will compensate accordingly and the last thing you want when starting is to learn bad swing habits right from the start.

A beginners set is exactly that, it doesn’t have to be the best or the most expensive set on the market. As long as it ticks the right boxes in terms of functionality and basic technology you will be all set. As your golf game evolves your equipment needs will also evolve and with time your set will look completely different to the one that you started with.
