I've been involved in the world of golf for just over five years now, staying on top of game improvement methods, the latest technologies and news.

March 13, 2021

If you are reading this article it is safe to assume that you are a senior golfer with a below-average swing speed, and maybe looking for a new driver? If this is true, then sit tight because I am reviewing 8 fantastic options for both men and women when it comes to increased distance and forgiveness in my quest to find the best golf driver for seniors.

Just because a golfer is classified as a senior it doesn’t mean that they have to play with a driver with a senior flex shaft or a driver that’s classified as a senior driver.

The swing speeds of senior and senior women’s golfers vary greatly. To find the correct driver for seniors various factors need to be considered starting with swing speed, loft, shaft options, spin rates, and forgiveness.

Don’t be alarmed if you aren’t familiar with these mentioned factors, we will provide clarity on this below to ensure that you know exactly what to look for when buying a new driver.

The Best Golf Driver for Seniors

With so many high-quality driver options to choose from, finding the perfect driver that matches your needs as a senior player can be quite a daunting process. Within the product reviews below, my goal is to simplify this as much as possible for you.

All golfers, including senior players, have different swing speeds. Some seniors swing it faster than the average male golfer, but its proven that the majority of swings happen to slow down and therefore struggle to create reasonable ball speed.

We we are going to look at various drivers that help with these challenges, and at the end I will say what I feel the best golf driver for seniors is that’s available. Additionally, we will also focus on key elements including shaft options, loft, forgiveness, offset and spin rates when reviewing these different drivers for seniors.

Best Golf Drivers for Seniors –
SLOW SWING SPEEDS

When it comes to finding the best driver for seniors with slow swing speeds, various elements and design features including shaft options, loft, spin rates, and forgiveness are all vital.

In this section I put a particular focus on loft and spin rates, for the reasons I will go onto explain.

Wilson Staff D7 Driver

The Wilson Staff D7 driver is an ultra-lightweight driver with a head weight of just 192 grams. When combined with a lightweight shaft this driver is the perfect driver for a senior player with a below-average swing speed.

In addition to its lightweight design, this driver is also available with 13 degrees of loft which is ideal for seniors that struggle to get the golf ball airborne as a result of slow swing speeds.

In addition to height, added loft also ensures that there is enough spin on the golf ball to produce a strong penetrating ball flight. More often than not senior players with slow swing speeds struggle with producing adequate spin and ball speed which both impact distance.

Cleveland is renowned for its wedge designs, but they also design and manufacture some of the best drivers for slow swing speeds. The HB Turbo by Cleveland is designed with the slow-swinging player in mind.

Slow swinging players lose their ability to launch the golf ball optimally as a result of slow swing speeds which is why added loft is a must. The Epic Flash is available in a 9, 10.5, and 12-degree option. Senior players that struggle with launching the golf ball into the air as a result of their slower swings won’t have any issues with that given that the Epic Flash can be adjusted to have up to 14 degrees of loft.

Best Golf Drivers for Seniors – FORGIVENESS

Slower swing speeds have a direct impact on smash factor. Smash factor refers to the amount of energy transferred from the clubhead to the ball at impact. Forgiving drivers ensure maximum ball speeds even on off-center strikes which is vital to ensure a high smash factor and maximum distance for slow swinging players.

So, in this section, I’ve kept a particular focus on drivers with forgiveness and spin rates but also reintroduced some of the drivers from above as we move closer to our mission of finding the best golf driver for seniors.

Wilson Staff LaunchPad

The Wilson Staff LaunchPad driver might not have the technology that one would find in the Epic Flash but customer comments such as “Wilson you’ve won me back” and “this driver hits bombs” speaks volumes of the design of the LaunchPad.

The LaunchPad features an advanced face design that delivers fast ball speeds, optimal spin rates, and high launch angles regardless of the quality of the strike. Performance such as this is why this driver is one of the most forgiving drivers currently available on the market.

The LaunchPad driver has a slightly offset hosel which helps golfers to get rid of that dreaded slice. If you are a senior player that struggles with a weak right ball flight, then this driver might just be the answer to all your problems.

Important Driver Design Features

Key Tips For Finding The Best Golf Driver for Seniors

You will notice throughout my search for the best golf driver for seniors, I have focused on a handful of key features in particular. I’d like to give a bit more depth to these features now, as it’s important you have all the information you need to make the right decision for you and your game.

Feel and Feedback

Driver feel or feedback and driver forgiveness are directly correlated. Forgiving drivers ensure exceptional feel and minimal feedback. The different terms can be confusing so let’s look at feel and feedback individually to get a better understanding of what they each mean. Feedback refers to what the golfer feels in their hands at impact, if the ball is hit in the center of the clubface feedback should be minimal, for off-center strikes feedback will be felt in the hands of the player. If feedback is minimal the driver has good feel and vice versa if the driver doesn’t offer good feel.

Forgiveness

Forgiveness, feel and feedback is closely related but there’s more to driver forgiveness than just feel and feedback. Yes, a forgiving driver does offer good feel and minimum feedback but it also ensures exceptional performance on off-center strikes. Forgiveness is very important for senior players. As a result of slower average swing speeds senior struggle as is to maximize ball speeds and optimize spin rates. On off-center strikes, this goes from bad to worse and the result is a significant loss both in terms of accuracy and distance. Forgiving drivers are designed to mitigate against these losses on off-center strikes. Forgiving drivers feature designs that ensure close to optimal performance even on the bad shots in terms of ball speed and spin rate numbers which in return ensures minimal losses from both a distance and accuracy point of view.

Loft Options

The average loft on a driver ranges between 8 and 10.5 degrees. Modern drivers allow for the loft on a club to be adjusted by up to 2 yards depending on the design of a driver. If you do decide to change the loft on your driver by adjusting the settings, pay very close attention to the face angle. Adding loft will open the face up, and decreasing loft will close the face angle. For the majority of seniors, a driver with around 10 degrees of loft will probably be optimal. With slower swing speeds more loft is required to launch the golf ball into the air, an optimal launch angle will ensure maximum distance which is vital to any golfer not just seniors and slow swingers. To learn more about launch angles click here.

Shaft Options

The importance of playing with the correct shaft in your driver cannot be overstated. Also, just because a shaft works well in one driver’s head doesn’t mean that it will work with a different driver head. Shaft and swing speed are directly correlated, most senior players will play with either a senior(A) or regular (R) flex shaft, but there is no reason as to why a senior can’t play with a stiff (S) or extra-stiff (XS) shaft. The general rule of thumb as to which shaft flex a player should use based on their swing speed is a follow:
  • – L flex – below 80 mph
  • – A flex – 70 – 80 mph
  • – R flex – 80 – 95 mph
  • – S flex – 95 – 105 mph
  • – XS flex – over 105 mph

Spin Rate & Ball Speed

Ball speed and distance are directly correlated, faster ball speeds mean more distance and no golfer will say no to added distance off the tee. For senior players, it is important to find the correct driver and shaft combo that delivers maximum ball speed. Also, a forgiving driver will ensure that ball speed remains high on off-center strikes to ensure that even the bad drives go a long way. In terms of spin rate, it is about finding a happy medium. If spin rates are too low the golf ball won’t get up into the air and if spin rates are too high the ball will balloon into the air. High spin rates also result in wild misses on drivers that either have too much cut or draw spin on the ball. Optimal spin rates will ensure a strong penetrating ball flight, accuracy, and maximum distance.
