Can Men Play with Women’s Golf Clubs?

A question that’s often asked when people look for the best golf clubs for women is whether men can play with women’s golf clubs. The short answer is yes, but whether they should is a different story.

To determine whether playing with women’s clubs will be best suited for your game, I will unpack various factors to help you answer this question.

Can Men Play with Women’s Golf Clubs?

Type of Male Golfer

Let’s start by looking at what type of male golfer might benefit from playing with ladies’ clubs. Women’s golf clubs are known for their lightweight designs. So, with that said, male players with slow swing speeds are the ones that will benefit most.

By playing with lightweight clubs, slow-swinging players will maximize their swing speeds for added distance. A set of lightweight women’s golf clubs might be the answer for male junior golfers and senior players who tend to struggle with swing speed.

In addition to the lightweight design of women’s clubs, shaft flex also plays an important role. Women’s clubs come standard with women’s flex graphite shafts. Women’s flex shafts are the most forgiving golf shaft profile. This means that these shafts are designed to help slow swinging players maximize their swing speed and height on their shots.

Furthermore, the length of women’s golf clubs is another factor to consider. Women’s clubs are slightly shorter than the average men’s club. Short male golfers like junior players will find value in playing with slightly shorter clubs. Playing with a club that matches your height, lie angles, and angles of attack won’t be an issue.

If a player plays with clubs too long for them, it can cause chaos at impact. The wrong lie angle can lead to all sorts of strike and direction issues. Golf is hard enough as is; the last thing you want is to struggle with a big hook simply because you are playing with clubs that are too long for you.

Possible Benefits

The benefits that male golfers may see from playing with women’s clubs will differ from one player to another. However, in general, an increase in swing speed and added height on iron shots, in particular, will be most evident.

Furthermore, added distance will be a byproduct as a result of faster swing speeds and added height. It is important to note that height doesn’t always equate to more distance. If the player’s swing speed doesn’t match the flex of a women’s club, spin rates will be too high, which will have the opposite effect. High spin rates will result in a loss of distance and accuracy.

Differences in Golf Clubs

From a design perspective, male and female golf clubs are very similar. The main difference between women’s and men’s clubs isn’t the design but the technical setup and construction. In general, women’s golf clubs feature lighter shafts with more flex than men’s clubs.

Women’s clubs also feature weaker standard lofts. Women tend to struggle with launching the golf ball into the air. By weakening (adding loft) the standard loft of women’s clubs, getting the ball into the air is easier, thanks to the added loft.

On average, women are shorter than men. As a result, the standard length of women’s clubs is shorter than that of men’s clubs. To learn more about the importance of club length and other differences, read our “Are women’s golf clubs different from men’s” article.

Final Thoughts

It boils down to results. If women’s clubs allow you to maximize your results, then there is no reason why men can’t play with them. If you are in the market for a new set of clubs, make sure to find the best option for your golf game, considering that it might be a women’s set.
