What is a Good Golf Drive Distance For a Woman?

On the LPGA Tour, Anne van Dam leads the tour in driving distance with a 291-yard average. The average driving distance on the LPGA Tour is around the 250-yard mark.

Players like van Dam, Lexi Thompson, and Bianca Pagdanagan are no strangers to hitting 300 yard plus drives. The focus on distance is just as prominent in the women’s game as on men’s tours. Don’t be surprised if the leading women average over the 300-yard mark within the next couple of years.

What Is A Good Golf Drive Distance For A Woman?

The average driving distance for women varies based on a variety of different factors.

Swing speed particularly has a direct impact on how far a player can hit the ball, but then so does the ball itself. If you’ve not got the best women’s golf ball for your game, then that can hold you back too.

1. Swing speed

The average swing speed for female amateur golfers is 65 mph. Women that swing the club at this speed will average roughly 170 yards off the tee. Players with a swing speed in the 80 mph range can easily reach the 200-yard mark with their drives

2. Handicap

In general, high handicappers have slower swing speeds, but swing speed and handicap aren’t correlated. Your handicap is a measure of your entire golf game, but swing speed and how far you hit the ball is only a single aspect.

Being able to hit the golf ball far helps, but without a good short game, distance is irrelevant. The general trend, however, when looking at women’s golfers leans towards the importance of swing speed. On average high handicappers have slow swing speeds and low handicappers have fast swing speeds. But as mentioned this is a general trend and it isn’t true in all cases.

3. Age

Age has an impact on how fast a player can swing the club. Juniors and older female players don’t have the muscle strength of a player in her 20’s or 30’s. As a result swing speed and distance are impacted.

The average swing speed of junior players under the age of 18 generally falls within the 65 to 85 mph range. The average driving distance for those swing speeds ranges between 160 and 210 yards. The same is true for women over the age of 50 years. Keep in mind that these numbers are averages and that there are outliers.

Key Factors About Driving Distances for Women.

Swing speed is one of the main factors that determine how far a player can hit their driver. But swing speed isn’t the be-all and end-all. The quality of the strike and spin rates also impact distance.

If a player has a fast swing speed but they aren’t able to make clean contact with the golf ball they will lose distance. Furthermore, low quality of strike will result in a spin rate that isn’t optimal. If spin rates are too low or too high the ball flight won’t be optimal and you will lose distance as a result. Spin rates in the 2500 – 3000 rpm range are ideal for female players to maximize distance.

1. Equipment

To add distance to your drives playing with the correct equipment is a must. The correct driver head and shaft combination will ensure fast club head speeds and optimal spin rates. In return, this will translate into max distance.

2. Widen Your Stance

A wider stance can also assist with hitting your driver further. By taking a wider stance you will increase stability in your swing. A stable base ensures that you can swing the club without having to worry about maintaining your balance. A balanced swing ensures good solid contact and max distance thanks to optimal spin rates.

3. Check Your Ball Position

Ball position is another important factor that contributes to how far you hit your driver. If your ball position is too far forward or too far back the quality of the strike will be impacted. Make sure that your ball position with your driver is just inside the left heel of your front foot.

4. Play With The Correct Golf Ball

Finally play with the correct golf ball for your swing speed. By playing with the correct golf ball compression ball speeds and spin rates will be optimal on each drive. In return, distance will be maximized on each drive.

Final Thoughts.

What is a good golf drive distance for a woman depends on a variety of factors. What is good for one player will be average for another. But at the end of the day, a good drive distance is the maximum distance that a woman can drive the ball based on their swing speed.

The next article will look at a very common question, and that’s are women’s golf balls different from men’s. You may be surprised by what this article uncovers, and that there’s really no such things as a ‘women’s ball’ when you break it down.
